AT&T's business support article covers 'Motorola NVG 510 and 589' together and offers three ways to hand the public IP to one device: DHCPS-dynamic, DHCPS-fixed (by MAC address) or Manual. It calls passthrough a common alternative to bridged mode.

Model numbers: NVG510 · Type: Gateway (modem + router)

How to set it up

  1. Connect a computer directly to the gateway by Ethernet and open http://192.168.1.254.
  2. Select the Firewall tab, then IP Passthrough (enter the Device Access Code if prompted).
  3. Set Allocation Mode to Passthrough and Passthrough Mode to DHCPS-fixed; enter your router's WAN MAC address in the Passthrough Fixed MAC Address field.
  4. Save, choose Restart Now, then power-cycle your router so it picks up the public IP.

Know before you switch

  • Only one device can be placed in passthrough mode (AT&T).
  • The device in passthrough loses the gateway's firewall protection and gets a WAN IP instead of a LAN IP (AT&T).
  • DHCPS-dynamic gives the public IP to the first device that asks, so a gateway reset can change which device receives it (AT&T).
  • The Manual option needs the WAN IP, gateway and subnet mask from AT&T customer care.
  • AT&T names the NVG510 and NVG589 together and documents no difference between them; the article sits on AT&T's small-business support site.
